Very rare and unusually well preserved
Lot 3101
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 19 mm, 3.40 g, 12 h), Rome, circa 320. CONST-ANTINVS AVG Laureate, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to right, the helmet decorated with two stars. Rev. VIRTV-S AVGG / P - R / R T Campgate with no doors and four turrets. RIC 186 var. (unlisted officina). Very rare. Well struck and clear, a very attractive coin. Extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

Bruun's bust D7, 'high-crested helmet', is impossible to delimit. In Ramskold's database, the interpretation of D7 is a helmet lacking a movable visor, while the crest can be of any type. This definition allows all of Bruun's reference examples to stay in their respective entries. A small number of helmets, including the one in this coin, are very close to D2, but are classified as D7, since the lower front of the helmet appears to be immovable.
